How to Play Pickleball: The Third-Shot Drop Explained

New to the sport and wondering what is pickleball? It’s a paddle sport that mixes elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, played on a small court with a perforated ball. Once you know how to play pickleball, the one shot that changes your game is the third-shot drop.

A quick refresher on pickleball rules

  • The game is usually played as doubles on a small court with a net.

  • The serve must be hit underhand.

  • The two-bounce rule applies. The return of serve must bounce, and so must the third shot, before players can volley.

  • The kitchen is the non-volley zone near the net. You can’t volley while standing in it.

Learn these pickleball rules first, and the game becomes much easier to follow. A note on gear: people often search for pickleball rackets, but the correct term is paddles.

What is the third-shot drop?

In a pickleball game, the serving team hits the first shot, the receiving team the second, and the serving team then hits the third shot. A third-shot drop is a soft, arcing shot that lands in the kitchen.

Why it matters

  • It gives you time to move up to the net.

  • It takes away your opponent’s attack, since they have to hit up.

  • It builds patience over power, which is what wins long rallies.

How to hit it

  1. Start balanced, with your paddle in front of you.

  2. Use a smooth, low-to-high motion. Lift the ball over the net rather than punching it.

  3. Keep the swing short and the wrist firm.

  4. Aim for a gentle arc so the ball peaks before the net and drops into the kitchen.

  5. Move forward after the shot and stop to get ready at the net.

Common mistakes

  • Hitting too hard or too flat.

  • Standing still after the shot.

  • Getting frustrated early. It takes many attempts to click.

A simple drill

Stand at the baseline with a partner at the kitchen line. Take turns dropping the ball into the kitchen. Try 10 in a row, then step further back.
