Pickleball Doubles Strategy for Beginners: 5 Tips to Win More Rallies
The best doubles strategy for beginner pickleball players is simple: keep the ball in play, move to the kitchen line with your partner, hit soft shots into the kitchen, and talk constantly. Patience wins more points than power.
Why Strategy Matters More Than Power
Pickleball is played on a small court of 20 by 44 feet, so hard hitting often hands the point to your opponents. Errors, not winners, decide most beginner games. These five habits reduce yours.
1. Serve and Return Deep
The serve is underhand and goes diagonally. A deep serve pushes your opponents back and gives you time to move forward. Return it deep too, which keeps the serving team from attacking early.
2. Respect the Two-Bounce Rule
The serve must bounce, and the return must bounce, before anyone volleys. Use that time to move forward, not to watch the ball.
3. Get to the Kitchen Line
The kitchen is the 7-foot non-volley zone on each side of the net. Winning positions are usually at its edge, because you can hit down on shots and control the pace. Move up together with your partner so no gap opens down the middle.
4. Learn the Dink
A dink is a soft shot that lands in your opponent’s kitchen. It stops them from attacking and waits for an error or a high ball you can put away. Aim low over the net and stay patient. Rallies of 10 shots are normal.
5. Try the Third-Shot Drop
If you serve, your second shot is the return, and your third is yours. A soft drop into the kitchen on that shot lets you walk up to the line instead of defending from the back. It takes practice, but it is the shot that separates casual players from consistent ones.
Talk to Your Partner
Call “mine” or “yours,” and decide in advance who takes shots down the middle. Most beginner points are lost to hesitation or both players going for the same ball.
Why Indoor Courts Help You Improve
Wind, sun, and heat change how the ball flies outdoors. At OneLve, Mangalore’s first dedicated pickleball centre, indoor courts keep conditions steady. That makes it easier to repeat the same drop or dink until it becomes a habit, in any season.
