Pickleball Rules for Singles: How to Play and Win

In singles pickleball, one player stands on each side of the net and plays on the same court used for doubles. The rules are almost identical: serve underhand and diagonally, let the ball bounce on the serve and return, stay out of the kitchen when volleying, and play to 11, winning by 2.

What is singles pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport played with a perforated ball over a low net. Singles is the one-on-one version. The court measures 20 feet by 44 feet for both singles and doubles, so a singles player covers the full width alone. That makes it a great workout and a good test of patience and placement.

What are the basic pickleball rules?

  • Serve underhand: Hit the ball diagonally across the court, from behind the baseline.

  • Two-bounce rule: The serve must bounce, and the return must bounce, before anyone can volley.

  • The kitchen: The 7-foot non-volley zone on each side of the net. You cannot volley while standing in it.

  • Scoring: Only the serving side scores a point.

  • Winning: Games go to 11, and you must win by 2.

How do serving and scoring work in singles?

Singles has one server and no second-server turn, which keeps it simple. Call the score as two numbers: your score first, then your opponent’s.

Server’s score

Serve from

Even (0, 2, 4...)

Right side

Odd (1, 3, 5...)

Left side

If the server faults, the serve passes to the opponent. This is called a side-out. Points are scored only when you are serving.

What strategy wins singles points?

  1. Hit deep: Deep shots push your opponent back and give you time.

  2. Move them side to side: You do not need power. Placing the ball wide forces errors.

  3. Use the drop shot: A soft shot into the kitchen brings your opponent forward and lets you take control of the net.

  4. Recover to the centre: After every shot, return to a ready position near the middle of the court.

  5. Stay patient: Long rallies favour the player who makes fewer mistakes.

  6. Build your fitness: Singles demands more movement, so stamina matters.

Practise these ideas with a friend before a match, and ask a coach to watch your footwork.

What mistakes should beginners avoid?

  • Hitting every shot as hard as possible.

  • Forgetting to recover to the centre after a shot.

  • Stepping into the kitchen while volleying.

  • Not calling the score before serving.

  • Ignoring the two-bounce rule on the serve and return.

Singles or doubles: which should you try first?

Doubles is easier on the legs and a good way to learn the game. Singles rewards fitness and placement. If you already know how to play pickleball, adding singles sharpens your footwork and shot control, which also helps your doubles game.

FAQs

Can you play singles in pickleball?  Yes. Singles uses the same court and nearly the same rules as doubles. The main differences are that only one player is on each side and there is no second server, so serving and scoring are simpler.

Is the court smaller for singles?  No. Singles and doubles are both played on a 20 by 44 foot court. In singles, one player covers the full court, which is why it demands more movement and stamina than doubles.

How is singles scored in pickleball?  Only the serving player scores. Games go to 11, and you must win by 2. The server serves from the right side when their score is even, and from the left when it is odd.
